South African swimming legend Chad le Clos has created sporting history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history after winning his record-breaking 21st medal.
The milestone came after Le Clos helped South Africa secure the bronze medal in the men’s 4x100m medley relay, pushing his total Commonwealth Games medal tally beyond the previous record held by Australia’s Emma McKeon.
At 34 years old, Le Clos continues to add to a career that has already made him one of Africa’s greatest swimmers and one of the most successful athletes in Commonwealth Games history.
A Record-Breaking Commonwealth Career
Le Clos’ Commonwealth Games journey began at the 2010 Delhi Games, where he announced himself as one of South Africa’s brightest swimming talents.
Across five editions of the Games, he has collected an incredible medal haul consisting of:
- 7 gold medals
- 5 silver medals
- 9 bronze medals
- 21 total Commonwealth Games medals
His consistency across more than a decade of competition has placed him among the most durable athletes in Commonwealth sporting history.
From Olympic Champion to Commonwealth Icon
Le Clos first became a global sporting superstar at the 2012 London Olympics, where he shocked the world by defeating American swimming legend Michael Phelps to win gold in the men’s 200m butterfly.
That victory transformed him into one of South Africa’s most recognisable athletes and inspired a new generation of swimmers across the continent.
Since then, he has continued competing at the highest level, representing South Africa at multiple Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
South Africa Celebrates Swimming Success
Le Clos’ historic achievement came during a strong swimming campaign for South Africa at Glasgow 2026.
The country’s swimmers produced several impressive performances, including Pieter Coetzé, who won gold in the men’s 50m backstroke and set a Commonwealth Games record during the competition.
