Uganda has reached a major milestone in its fight against Ebola after discharging its last remaining patient, officially beginning the 42-day countdown required by the World Health Organization (WHO) before the country can be declared free of the virus.
The final patient, a Congolese national receiving treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, was discharged after testing negative for the Ebola virus twice. Under WHO guidelines, if no new infections are recorded during the next 42 days—equivalent to two incubation periods for the Bundibugyo strain—the outbreak will officially be declared over.
A Major Public Health Achievement
Uganda declared the outbreak on 15 May 2026 after confirming imported cases linked to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where a much larger Ebola outbreak continues.
Since then, the country has recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths. Of those infections, 15 were imported from the DRC, while five were locally transmitted. Health officials credit rapid surveillance, contact tracing, isolation, and cross-border screening for preventing wider community transmission.
Speaking during the discharge ceremony, Uganda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, described the moment as a symbol of hope and resilience.
He said the country’s response demonstrated that Ebola can be defeated through strong public health systems, early detection, and coordinated action between government agencies and healthcare workers.
The 42-Day Countdown Explained
Although the last patient has recovered, Uganda cannot yet declare the outbreak over.
WHO requires countries to complete a 42-day monitoring period after the final confirmed patient tests negative and is discharged. During this time, health authorities must continue intensive surveillance to ensure no hidden chains of transmission remain.
If another confirmed case emerges during the countdown, the clock resets and a new 42-day observation period begins.
Health officials say surveillance teams will remain active across the country, particularly at border crossings, healthcare facilities, and communities considered to be at higher risk.
Congo Outbreak Still Poses a Threat
While Uganda is moving closer to ending its outbreak, neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to battle one of the largest Ebola epidemics in its history.
According to health authorities, the DRC has recorded more than 2,000 confirmed cases and hundreds of deaths, with new infections still being reported. The World Health Organization believes the actual number of infections could be significantly higher because many cases remain undetected.
