The United Kingdom has appointed veteran diplomat Vicky Seymour as its new Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, reinforcing Britain’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Africa’s largest economy.
Seymour has officially assumed office in Abuja, succeeding Gill Lever, whose posting ended in June. Her appointment comes as the UK and Nigeria seek closer cooperation in trade, investment, security, migration and regional development.
The British High Commission said the appointment reflects the UK’s continued commitment to expanding its partnership with Nigeria across areas of mutual interest.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
As Deputy High Commissioner, Seymour will support the UK’s diplomatic mission while working closely with the Nigerian government, business leaders and civil society organisations.
The UK and Nigeria share one of Britain’s most important partnerships in Africa. The United Kingdom remains one of Nigeria’s largest foreign investors and a key trading partner, with cooperation spanning education, healthcare, climate action, security and economic development.
Officials expect Seymour to play a leading role in strengthening bilateral engagement and identifying new opportunities for collaboration.
Trade and Investment at the Forefront
Economic cooperation is expected to be a major focus of Seymour’s tenure.
British companies continue to invest in Nigeria across sectors including energy, financial services, technology, agriculture and infrastructure, while Nigerian businesses are expanding their presence in the UK.
With Nigeria implementing economic reforms to attract greater foreign investment, both governments are expected to work together to boost bilateral trade, encourage private sector partnerships and support long-term economic growth.
Business leaders believe stronger commercial ties could create new opportunities for investment, innovation and job creation in both countries.
Cooperation Beyond the Economy
The UK and Nigeria also maintain close cooperation on regional security and international development.
