New Marketplace Seeks to Tackle Online Shopping Fraud.
A new African e-commerce platform, MyArigo, has been launched with a focus on addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the continent’s rapidly expanding digital marketplace: consumer trust. The platform, developed by Arigo Technologies International Ltd, is designed to connect buyers and sellers while introducing verification mechanisms intended to reduce online shopping fraud and improve confidence in digital transactions. The launch was reported on 18 August 2026, making it a fresh development for Aftown News.
The platform enters an African e-commerce market that has expanded rapidly alongside increasing smartphone penetration, mobile payments and internet access. Yet the growth of online commerce has also been accompanied by complaints about fake products, fraudulent sellers, payment scams and difficulties resolving disputes between buyers and merchants.
MyArigo is positioning itself around solving that trust problem rather than competing solely on the number of products available.
Trust Becomes a Major E-Commerce Challenge.
Online shopping in Africa has grown considerably, but consumer confidence remains uneven. In many markets, customers still rely heavily on social media platforms and messaging applications to discover products and communicate with sellers. While these channels have made it easier for small businesses to reach customers, they can also make it difficult to verify the identity and credibility of sellers.
Consumers may pay for products that never arrive, receive goods that differ substantially from advertised items or struggle to recover money after fraudulent transactions.
MyArigo’s approach is based on creating a more structured marketplace where sellers and transactions can be verified. The company says its platform is designed to improve transparency between buyers and sellers and provide mechanisms that can make digital commerce safer.
African SMEs Are Looking for Digital Markets.
The platform’s launch also comes as African small and medium-sized businesses increasingly move online. For many SMEs, digital platforms offer a way to reach customers outside their immediate geographic area without the cost of establishing physical stores.
However, the informal nature of much African online commerce can make scaling difficult. A seller may have a large social-media following but no independent reputation system, formal customer-service structure or reliable mechanism for resolving disputes.
A trusted marketplace could therefore provide value not only to consumers but also to legitimate businesses. Verified sellers could potentially distinguish themselves from fraudulent operators and build reputations that carry across transactions.
For African SMEs, that could make digital commerce a more sustainable source of revenue rather than simply another marketing channel.
The Platform Enters a Crowded Market.
MyArigo is entering a market where both international and African technology companies have already invested heavily in online commerce.
Major platforms such as Jumia helped establish large-scale e-commerce across several African markets, while thousands of smaller businesses now sell directly through social media, websites and messaging applications.
The challenge for MyArigo will therefore be differentiation. Competing simply on product selection or price could be difficult in a market where consumers already have multiple ways to shop online.
Trust could provide a stronger point of differentiation if the company can demonstrate that its verification and consumer-protection systems actually reduce fraud.
Technology Alone Cannot Eliminate Fraud.
The launch also highlights a broader issue facing African digital commerce: technology can reduce certain risks, but it cannot eliminate fraud entirely.
A successful trust system requires effective seller verification, secure payments, reliable customer support and rapid action when suspicious activity is detected. It also requires consumers to understand how to protect themselves when shopping online.
