TowerCo of Africa has expanded its infrastructure partnership with MTN Uganda following the handover of a new telecommunications site in Kokumu, strengthening efforts to improve mobile network coverage and connectivity in underserved communities.
The development forms part of ongoing investment in Uganda’s telecommunications infrastructure as demand for reliable mobile and internet services continues to grow. By extending network infrastructure into more communities, the partnership aims to improve access to digital services and support greater participation in Uganda’s expanding digital economy.
New Infrastructure for Kokumu
The new telecommunications site in Kokumu is expected to strengthen network coverage for residents and businesses in the surrounding area.
For communities with limited telecommunications infrastructure, the deployment of new network sites can significantly improve the quality and reliability of mobile services. Better connectivity allows residents to communicate more easily while improving access to services that increasingly depend on mobile networks.
The site handover reflects the continued collaboration between TowerCo of Africa and MTN Uganda in expanding the infrastructure required to deliver telecommunications services across the country.
Expanding Mobile Connectivity
Uganda has experienced significant growth in mobile phone and internet usage as more people rely on digital technology for communication, business and everyday services.
However, connectivity remains uneven, particularly between major urban centres and rural communities. Building telecommunications infrastructure in less connected areas is therefore an important part of efforts to reduce the country’s digital divide.
Additional network sites can help operators increase coverage while improving service quality for existing customers.
For people living in underserved areas, improved connectivity can also create opportunities to access online education, digital financial services, healthcare information and government platforms.
Supporting Uganda’s Digital Economy
Reliable telecommunications infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to Uganda’s economic development.
Small businesses are using mobile platforms to communicate with customers, promote products and receive digital payments. Entrepreneurs are also building businesses that depend on reliable internet connections to reach customers beyond their immediate communities.
Mobile money has become another important part of this digital transformation, allowing millions of Africans to send and receive money using their mobile phones.
As more services move online, the quality of the underlying telecommunications infrastructure will play a major role in determining how widely people can participate in the digital economy.
Infrastructure Partnerships Drive Expansion
Telecommunications tower companies have become important partners for mobile network operators across Africa.
Rather than every operator independently building and managing all of its physical tower infrastructure, specialized infrastructure companies can develop and operate sites that support telecommunications networks.
